‘The Lobster Pot Café’ Gibson employs a Brownie 127 bakelite camera with meniscus lens to create a vintage Festival of Britain look to his pictures. Restricted to shooting in bright sunlight, his own shadow, seen in every picture, has become a trademark.
Gibson was raised an orphan by the sisters of Our Lady of Perpetual Sorrow at the Mountebank School for Foundlings in the East End of London. A lonely child, he entertained himself by learning to throw his own voice. After finding fame as the popular ventriloquist Vernie Varnish, making several appearances on local television, he retired from show business and now runs the Lobster Pot Café on Mudeford Quay in Dorset. April–October. No coaches. He is a keen amateur photographer and president of the Highcliffe Hi-Life Camera Club. Regular field trips. Darkroom available. Gibson’s Artistic Nude Life Studies have won countless awards in regional competitions. He took up writing after the death of his wife Shirley in a boating accident.
