Gibson grew up in the little seaside town of Christchurch, on the edge of the New Forest, Hampshire. He is thought to have attended Sandhills Infant School and Somerford Secondary Modern, who deny any knowledge of him. After several unsuccessful attempts to join the trawlers, and failing to qualify as a member of the local lifeboat crew, he moved inland and spent many years living in a series of small rooms in north London. A secretive and suspicious man, he hasn’t been seen in public since 2001. It’s believed he was evicted from his last known address after setting fire to the building while attempting to burn his books and papers. His surviving manuscripts and letters are now held in the Howard Gotlieb Archival Research Center at Boston University USA.
