A vintage cinema poster for The Hovel starring Miles Gibson and Stephanie Dulac. The film won a Golden Lion at the Venice Festival.
Miles Gibson, son of a wealthy English Marxist and a famous Brazilian tango dancer, grew up in Cuba and speaks five languages. After training at the old Lenin School of Dramatic Arts in Havana he collaborated with the revolutionary Taiwanese director Freddy Li Wang and has appeared in a long list of independent films, including ‘Child of the Drains’ and ‘The Goat Herder Dreams of the City’. He was briefly involved with fund raising for the Shining Path guerrillas in Peru but their brutality and torture of hostages damaged his reputation and he was forced to retire from the screen. He married the French architect Eloise Schiaparelli and they now breed horses on their private Bolivian ranch. They are both active in local politics and passionate advocates of land reform.
A still from the production of The Hovel. The picture was famously shot entirely on location with an old Vinten model K ‘Normandy’ camera using available light.
